My old friends will know that once, I had this dream where I found myself in an orderly field of purple flowers bordered by pine trees. The sun was shining, there wasn't a breath of wind, and there were bees buzzing around everywhere.
There were no birds or other flying insects, and there were no people besides me. The bees had, in my dream, taken over the world. Ants were their partners, grasshoppers were their simple-minded slaves, and humans were the ones who minded the purple flowers. The purple flowers had been genetically modified, ironically by humans, so that they could provide everything for the bees, but they were less stable. The flowers needed a human mind to manage them, and so planted shallowly underground for every few plants was an unconscious person that breathed and ate the blood of others that had already died.
What I most remember about this dream is the colors: the dusty evergreen of the pine trees, the endless purple flowers, the pale golden sunlight, yellow and black bees covered in shining pollen, the thick red blood, the rich dark earth. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what those flowers were---I thought maybe they were purple loosestrife, only darker. But today, just today, I found out that these flowers were lavender.
Today, just today, I saw pictures of Furano.
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?
