That is the biggest problem with the pieced together fansub groups. They tend to be all eager to sub things, while not actually being able to translate it. Its great and all that they love to promote the industry (while it kinda isn't needed anymore, with the gabillion fansubbers out there at the moment) and are keen to stick with something.
But yeah, I was approached to translate stuff before, and I pointed out to them that I wasn't keen on mecha, on overall crappy shows. They gave me some pitiful mecha show that suffered from every cliche in the book, and was painful to listen too since the Japanese acting was gratingly bad to say the least. I did the first episode in about an hour, sent it back and said "no way." The guy said that if I proved any good then I could have a say in what is done next. I kinda laughed and never spoke to them since.
Shortly after I left I heard they had pretty much folded, since they had no translators at all. Keeping the translators happy should be the no. 1 priority. /piff
