Since nobody is on AIM I have to fling my cooking jabber at LJ.

My mother says she gets kind of depressed around Christmas season. This isn't an affliction I suffer from but I understand how it works, and I also understand the result---that is, mom stops cooking dinner a lot, I get fat, bloated, and yucky from eating takeout, and I never get to eat anything I really like. Mom has a holiday to work on, and also she has a really shitty class to teach this year. So I have made a swift coup-d'etat in the country of din-din. I cook dinner this month. Mom pays bills, corrects papers, and stares at the TV when she comes home.

I have said I'm having a little let-down after my trip to Japan. I'm kind of having trouble sticking to games and books and things and I have these terrible urges to do more active things. This is a soft outlet i.e. not actually a job :|

Wednesday: shimesaba served on rice and accompanied with some condiments
I bought fresh shiso for this, but the thing about shiso is that I fukken' hate shiso. I looked pretty funny when I was cutting it because I kept trying not to smell it. Later on I developed heartburn from the smell alone. Feeling sort of like not eating it, I called over my mom and asked that she smell it. She said it was "bad." Really bad. "Like a bad dream." ANOTHER COUNTRY HEARD FROM :> We put that in the trash.

Thursday: haddock, mushrooms and onions wrapped up in foil with butter, white wine, and lemon, and baked. Boiled potatoes on the side. This tasted fine, but I cooked the lemon in the packets and the butter juice inside was real bitter. Also, this night my family and I watched the newer version of the Willy Wonka movie, and were all heartily disgusted.

Friday: Takeout (we drove out to the country on this night and there wasn't enough time)

Saturday: Simmered yellowtail and daikon, a.k.a. the infamous buri daikon, with tofu miso soup and plain rice. I REALLY LOOKED FORWARD TO THIS. I was mostly expecting the daikon to be good, because winter daikon simmered in soy broth is just...really...good...like that...but when I put a little fish in my mouth suddenly my soul rocketed out of my body into the heavens, past a cold, dark, choppy winter sea under a grey sky, broken with snowflakes. . It was like tuna, only tender and salty with a wonderful sea smell. I never, ever wanted to stop eating that. Eventually I ran out and now I think I would like to eat this a lot, lot more, at a cheap restaurant, but there's nothing in Boston that I'm aware of. *neatly cuts away the usual rant about Japanese food in Boston* New material: WHY?! Is buri daikon too brown and BORING for you people? You live in frickin'. BOS. TON. It's SEAFOOD. What could POSSIBLY be so hard about this?! TT_TT

I left my swap disks at home so I have to either play the stuff I don't feel like playing >:| WOULD YOU BELIEVE I can still stay interested in Tales of Destiny Remake?
