Tones are one of the things that have scared me away from learning Chinese. (That and mainland Chinese doing weird things to 'simplify' kanji.) So I can understand why it would be intimidating. :) May I ask why you're learning it? Is there something you'd like to read/watch in that language, or is it general interest?
