(21:12:35) Yang: What's your dream RPG if you could make one?
(21:13:02) Robin: Oh dear. This requires a long answer and I'm getting ready to go to bed
(21:13:50) Robin: It would involve real-time battles and cooking and the option to see characters interact outside of the story
(21:14:07) Robin: Also a complicated elemental system. I'm thinking at least 10 elements
(21:14:50) Robin: The option to change your character's appearance with various armors etc.
(21:15:19) Robin: Or costumes
(21:15:27) Robin: Actual hilarity
(21:15:33) Robin: And enough with the onsen scenes already
(21:17:00) Robin: Strategy turn-based battle systems on a grid can be fun too, but they can be really stressful and hard
(21:17:05) Yang: ooh, better yet, a pivotal tragedy in an onsen
(21:17:09) Robin: ...
(21:17:09) Yang: somebody drowns
(21:17:21) Yang: or a small kid gets kidnapped
(21:17:28) Yang: like Tom Cruise's son in Minority Report
(21:17:34) Yang: never to be found again
(21:17:38) Robin: No more muh-fuh onsens
(21:17:51) Yang: You should have an eating minigame too
(21:17:58) Yang: running around, trying to eat all the osekiben
(21:18:22) Robin: You mean ekiben, and that's basically an item collecting minigame
(21:18:28) Robin: That's a little fun, but not very
(21:19:17) Robin: It might be more interesting if each area just had its own special souvenir food item you could buy
(21:20:50) Robin: The characters would either have set skills or set predispositions to skills
(21:20:50) Yang: there you have it
(21:21:39) Robin: I would also like at least 6 different statistics for characters
(21:21:49) Robin: ...actually, much more than that
(21:23:24) Yang: Diablo and Dungeons/Dragons-type PC RPGs like Baldur's Gate do that in the old fashioned way. When you level in Diablo, you get points to allot to each stat. You have a point, I don't see many stats in Japanese RPGs
(21:24:36) Robin: Too many stats leads to confusion for n00bs, as does a complicated elemental system, so they are generally reduced
(21:25:02) Robin: I think it's important to differentiate between magic/physical power/defense, though
(21:25:25) Robin: Ragnarok Online only had 6 stats, but you got to change them in whatever way you liked
(21:25:38) Robin: ...well, almost
(21:26:01) Robin: And then there were a bunch of derivative stats like attack speed, evade, attack/magic power etc.
(21:26:49) Yang: Mmm.
(21:27:40) Robin: With the elemental system, I prefer for there to be opposites rather than a rock-paper-scissors system
(21:28:08) Robin: Because the latter tends to lead to BS like "earth is strong against water" PFFFBBBBT
(21:29:17) Robin: ONMYOUDOU? JOLLY GOOD
(21:30:01) Yang: are those the magicians that summon things?
(21:30:44) Robin: Onmyouji are people who specialize in curses, if I understand correctly
(21:31:02) Robin: Both sticking them on people and getting rid of them
(21:31:03) Yang: charms
(21:31:11) Robin: It's basically wicca
(21:31:17) Robin: Only with 5 elements [DISCLAIMER: STFU!!!!!!!!11 Robin knows they are different OK]
(21:31:28) Yang: Negi's Setsuna did that with her paper things
(21:31:41) Robin: Yeah, and it has a history of using paper to make birdies
(21:31:43) Yang: And a paper chibi ver of herself
(21:31:59) Robin: Small paper avatars for attacking, messages, etc.
(21:32:13) Yang: that was autonomous, but kind of stupid b/c it "was so small"
(21:33:31) Robin: I would like it if each character had a signature weapon
(21:33:47) Robin: I like it when characters are specialized and defined for me
(21:33:58) Robin: I don't like it when they aren't. FF8 bothered me for that reason
(21:33:59) Yang: Definitely
(21:34:19) Yang: And no random char deaths
(21:34:28) Yang: that leave their whole backstory unexplained
(21:34:48) Robin: Well, that's a problem with lots of other kinds of fiction too
(21:34:51) Yang: about how they tie in with the greater mythology of the story, which is hinted at greatly
(21:35:00) Robin: OKAY, I GET IT
(21:35:04) Robin: I DIDN'T LIKE THAT SHE DIED EITHER
(21:35:16) Yang: but is severed as soon as that long haired stud w/ the tight ass fell on her with his long curved
(21:35:33) Robin: I also hate it when so-and-so gets kidnapped
(21:35:45) Robin: And then when they give them back they're a lower level than everyone else
(21:35:59) Robin: Colette got kidnapped a lot in Symphonia, and she was already not the strongest character
(21:36:07) Yang: aw man
(21:36:13) Robin: Oh! I hate it when there's weak or sucky characters with no point!
(21:36:18) Robin: Colette wasn't that bad
(21:36:26) Yang: was there one in FF7?
(21:36:32) Yang: Yuffie? I know a lotta ppl hate her
(21:36:37) Robin: Mmm...she's fast, though
(21:36:42) Yang: although she was great jailbait in AC
(21:36:47) Robin: And she great over limits
(21:37:08) Robin: But when the main character is omnipotent and all the other characters have no outstanding stats or skills, I freaking hate that
(21:37:39) Robin: I will not play an RPG with only one character
(21:37:42) Robin: Not An RPG.
(21:38:03) Robin: I also avoid RPGs with a dearth of female characters, unless the guys are gay, and then I still might not like it
(21:38:09) Robin: For instance: Suikoden
(21:38:19) Robin: Not many girls, but epically gay
(21:38:45) Yang: hee hee
(21:38:52) Yang: But that explains Zelda?
(21:38:57) Yang: only one main char
(21:39:03) Robin: I never played Zelda myself, yes
(21:39:05) Yang: who doesn't even get much magic
(21:39:08) Robin: I watched other people play
(21:39:17) Robin: It's also why I won't play Kingdom Hearts
(21:39:26) Robin: No women except for guests in the main party
(21:39:30) Yang: ohhhh
(21:39:32) Yang: ok
(21:39:40) Robin: And you can't really play Donald or Goofy
(21:39:42) Robin: It's just Sora
(21:40:09) Yang: I rem when Disney Toontown mmorpg went free beta in freshman yr at Duke, coupla ppl I knew got really into it
(21:40:47) Robin: I seem to remember PA extolling its virtues
(21:41:45) Yang: the random encounter victory dance was ridunkulous
(21:42:07) Robin: In Tales, they have post-battle conversations
(21:42:18) Yang: they do this butt wagging
(21:45:19) Robin: Colette: "Our weapons are love!" Genis: "Justice!...and" Kratos: "Ugh...Hope."
(21:45:26) Robin: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
(21:47:17) Robin: Omigod I forgot Kratos says "Rest in peace, sinners!" when he casts Judgement
(21:47:20) Robin: Unf unf
(21:48:05) Robin: Okay, I'm tired
(21:48:18) Robin: Now go make me my RPG
(21:50:27) Yang: I'm too busy laying out the soundtrack for my Sailor Moon RPG using the 10+ yrs worth of anime, live action, and musical OSTs... on my imaginary world of planet Glornak Seven.
(21:51:26) Robin: ...
(21:51:47) Robin: Most of which you've downloaded in the last year
(21:51:54) Yang: And which you'ev also given me
(21:52:00) Robin: D:
(21:52:00) Yang: you gave me the anime albums
(21:52:12) Yang: I got the PGSM and musicals myself
(21:52:18) Robin: HOW DARE YOU USE MY GIFT FOR EVIL
(21:53:22) Robin: DESU DESU DESU

OK VIDEO GAME DEVELOPERS. YOU CAN'T SAY YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT ANYMORE.

Oh, everybody look at my journal. And my icons, too, I changed them. "The Best Part of Waking Up" is back (≡ω≡) and everything is blue so you don't have to be like "ew pink."
