I don't really mind 'serious' stories so much, but in the case of Bokurano you have this irrational setting that seems like just an excuse for maximum trauma. Although it's true I really can't stand hopeless stories (I won't read Holocaust novels --;)

FMA... I haven't watched the anime or read much of the manga except for the latest chapters, but is it that grim? Although some terrible things happen, the main characters we started out with (Ed, Al, Roy, Winry, Hawkeye) are still alive and well.
PSP games should work on every PSP, no? *_* I don't know much about the hacking except that you can use it to emulate PSX games...
