I don't think you'll have problems writing essays, from reading your posts..
Is Tales of Destiny PS2 that angsty? I remember the original as being quite stupid actually. XD (I mean, Stahn.. ^^;)
P3's holding my interest, but I've been taking breaks from it. A while ago I caught myself obsessing over it to the point where I couldn't concentrate on other things, so I stopped playing for a while. As for length, I'm playing it much more slowly than most people - I've seen people reach the same point at 35 hours. Because you can socialize, dungeon crawl, and do sidequests when and if you want (aside from story sequences, which aren't that common) the pace is really up to you. I'm the type of RPG player that hates missing stuff though, so I play very meticulously and try to take advantage of every 'day'. XD
(Digression: the Commus/S-Links you want to develop are also up to you, unless you want to be completely OCD and try to maximise all commus in one playthrough. It's both linear and open-ended in some respects. I can't think of another game where the silent hero archetype is so well executed - he really is the player and you really have an effect on his 'personality', fighting style and relationships.)
I think the one you don't select still appears in the story..? The summary is 子供を1人紫藤家に預ける事になるが、いつかは清四郎が帰ってきて親子4人で暮らせると信じている。 Probably the rationale is that it would be hard for a single mom to deal with two babies... but still! :( It's probably just because of gameplay reasons. :/ Bah!
The Amazon reviews for this game are really good (and the art is really cute). I think you might enjoy it since there are 4 voices for each of the boys, depending on their age/personality. I kind of want to play it but I think it would make me feel like a だめ人間 ;_; Maybe when I go to Japan (this is going to be a legendary trip when I actually do it) if I can get it for cheap in a bin somewhere. XD
