News on the school front:
-Remember when I was talking about my classes? Well, basically, whatever I said I was taking before, I switched out of. I'm still taking two classes, but they're different. It was a pain.

-For the first time since I started taking classes last year, I found myself unable to go into a class. The problem is situational and easily solved, so it's not a threat, but I kind of feel like I...fell down. It was crummy.

-I have, like...more homework than I thought...yeah... >_> It's nothing I can't handle, but it gave me bad dreams last night. I'm feeling more pressure.

News on the outrage front:
-Um, yeah. You can't call a woman a dried fish and expect me to read your comic book. Really, I've had it up to here with stories about a gorgeous woman struggling and panicking and suffering and working so hard for a jackass who dispenses love and encouragement only rarely, if at all. For feeding this nonsense to girls, how about you go fuck yourself? With a dried fish, of course.

-Why do we put the burden on the artists and their fans? Why doesn't someone fire back at the people who can't permit gayness to exist anywhere, ever? (P.S., everybody's heard about that guy who says his country doesn't have any homosexuals, right? har har)

-Duel Love: OH MY GOD. YOU MEAN GIRLS EXIST? THEY PLAY GAMES? THEY LIKE TO BE TITILLATED? AND THEY HAVE MONEY? ò_ó It's not the content, it's that many men are astonished at this discovery. Am now very pessimistic, blah blah, here's something that's totally going to be marginalized.

Nothing more of importance to discuss at the moment, though for those of you who know Nanoha: would this anime series make a better MMORPG, or Wii game? Is there any way to combine the two? Will it ever happen? I would totally pay money---I might even break the law---to play a game like that. (Alternatively, where is the LJ RPG where people are not stupid?)

I think it's really admirable that you're taking those classes! It must be uncomfortable but stick with it :)

...Who is calling a woman a dried fish? I think I had better hear about this >_> (Misogyny in comics fandom really doesn't surprise me that much anymore, I've seen a few scandals already)

*goes off on tangent* I HATE AHMADINEJAD. Seriously, I'm kind of glad he made those remarks, because more people should be aware of what a viper he is. And hurray to the people at Columbia for protesting him!

Honestly I don't really like the looks of Duel Love, but I didn't like the looks of Doki Doki Majo Shinpan either. Personal taste. But yaoi fandom is getting pretty huge and people are definitely starting to notice (that one blog about a guy's life with '801-chan' for example..)

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's "Himono Onna," and if it's worth anything, it's probably actually just using that title to get attention, and really shows how wrong it is to call people that, but...maybe not. I've seen some pretty fuckin' stupid shit fed to women in my day. I found it when I was indulging myself with some personality tests on yahoo.co.jp---they have several that are based around this series and very very clearly aimed at women.

Thank you. I do intend to put up a fight with these classes, even if they do eat away at my video game time >:|

What a prick, huh? My question is, will that make Bush more or less likely to attack Iran? =w=

I don't really feel much interest in Duel Love, but I would like to see more games like it made. Ideally there would be more titillating games for girls on the PSP, ideally with characters who remind me of Ed and Roy >_> Ideally men would be aware of women playing games and this being totally normal. I don't demand acknowledgment of yaoi, because not all of us are fangirls and I'd rather be left alone anyway >_>

Duel Love is Dokimajo for girls! ww
I avoided the stand at TGS though hurhurhurrr *runs*
You know what GIRL means on the internet, right? It means Guy In Real Life.
Good luck with your classes!

I hear Columbia's president totally ripped the guy a new one in public.

you know what, edited

Is this Hotaru no Hikari that you're talking about? (It's the only manga I found in connection to this term.) I don't see why they are being so critical.. the idea is someone who after work goes home and takes her suit off and turns on the air conditioner and drinks a beer? Isn't that everybody? Males and females included? If people are worried about women not getting married maybe they should do something about the insane work hours in Japan. So people will actually have the energy left to socialize.

It's a better term than 'parasite women' though, at least.

...Er, let's hope it is not the same kind of 'critical examination' that Kodomo no Jikan is... >_< (I hate the concept of that manga so much... I was relieved they canceled the US release.)

Ahmadinejad frightens me for more reasons than that (reason a: he threatened to wipe Israel off the map and reason b: he's collecting nukes) but if people will criticize him for his suppression of individual liberties and freedom of the press (the Iranian secret service murdered a Canadian reporter who was investingating human rights abuses) I'm all for it. This is a very scary man.

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
...yes, I know, NO GIRLS ON THE INTERNET. That's one of the reasons I quit visiting /b/ regularly. The near-daily announcements (or copypasta) that women deserve to be raped were actually getting to me. I thought it would be healthier if I didn't adjust and learn to laugh at that kind of thing.

And, well, yes, now they're all going to say they got the idea for Duel Love from a much better game: Dokimajo! ...maybe that's going too far, but, uh. I mean, I couldn't argue that Duel Love is any BETTER than Dokimajo. If I had the option to visit a stand for Duel Love at an event in person, I would also opt out. Yeah, I'll just be titillated in private, thanks. ._.

Ah...oh. Oh, that's the name. Oh, god, I'm so embarrassed, I must have thought it had a different title because I was so focused on another WORD >_> Anyway, uh, yeah, it bothered me because I don't see them calling men who stay home and read comic books all the time a stinking, unsexy consumable. I dunno, maybe they do, and it makes a good point about how nobody can afford to sit around being entitled when it comes to romance. Or maybe women really are like lollipops and toothbrushes? I, too, think that they need to do something, such as relieving company workers of the enforced alcoholism and relieving the rest of the country of xenophobia and/or racism.

The problem is that they call it a critical examination when it's, at best, pandering, if not utter, UTTER bullshit. It's that they sell these damaging things to women as the one true philosophy. (This is, incidentally, also my problem with romantic comedies.)

Yes, some criticism is certainly in order. ...there are too many crazy guys running the world out there. Now I'm worried. =_=

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I heard, too.

[identity profile] narugami.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I still don't get the part about the dried fish... Are dried fish unpopular in Japan? Less tasty than regular fish? *is baffled*

I think male otakus do get quite a bit of opprobrium but yeah, there's no widespread social criticism of men who come home and sit around in their underwear. Isn't that the same idea as the dried fish women? (The phrase really does make me laugh ^^;;;)

Personally though I don't pay much attention to the 'messages' in such shows unless they really hit you over the head with it..

Didn't mean to make you worried :/

[identity profile] runan.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only heard vague things about this Ahmadinejad, mostly because I don't want to depress myself by reading about him.

Good luck with your classes--they do suck, though. =_= I hate school.

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, YOU'RE not making me worried. THEY are. Not you.

Do you know why there are so many female characters who like fruit (Colette comes to mind) in Tales games? Because it's supposed to be an suggestively girly and virginal food. It's pretty and colorful, it smells good, it's delicate, it's a little sweet and tart, it's juicy, it's expensive as hell... ._. Of course real people don't think about this, but you hear a lot about it in the anime world. By contrast, dried fish in Japan are kind of homey and unglamourous, smelly, cost-effective, utterly lifeless and cold, and basically just the kind of thing a 50-year-old housewife back in the country would make (homemade pickles have even bigger problems with this). Take from this what you will. I myself sort of think it's like when Americans call a woman a cold fish, or a lollipop/toothbrush (don't want someone else to use it for the first time).

They do link manliness/virility/toughness with a preference for meat or savory foods (see also: Lloyd and Reid's preferences), so it's not like men don't escape it completely, but I don't see many people drawing them opening their mouths wide for strawberries covered in dewdrops (unless it is fanservice or just fanwork. Mm, Lloyd eating strawberries). Or making a whole series where they go on about how male otaku are like string beans [or whatever small and phallic vegetable you like].

I, like...I feel as if not everybody---especially younger, less confident, and more vulnerable women in a man's world---can tell when a manga series is preaching bullshit. I'm afraid that girls are going to take this stuff to heart and start calling each other dried fish, and then the females will be enforcing a double standard. ._. I wonder if anyone could be that silly...but how the heck should I know?

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they do. I'm sort of wigging out about school. Stupid school.

[identity profile] xephyris.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
I... like eating fruit. This worries me now.

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
It may amuse you to learn that I generally dislike fruit, particularly when it has been cooked. Also, that one of the exceptions is bananas. =_________= LOL. Clearly I am going overboard, but it's been on my mind for a while. Why the heck not?

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I also take some of my evidence from the foods that are mentioned as being "good" or "bad" for consumption on dates (first or not), and the way everybody says Milky Way's parfaits are Not For Y Chromosomes. (But they like nummy sweet stuff, too! And that's why all these arbitrary gender boundaries make me sad.)

[identity profile] xephyris.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'd think some of the "bad" foods for consumption of dates might be because of other things too, like maybe because they give you wind wwww

But yes, I do see what you mean. However, I do generally prefer savoury foods, and don't usually eat sweet things. It's just... fruits are an exception.

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
BWA! HAHA. Oh dear me, I never thought of that XD I thought the only other requirement for a good date food was that they can be eaten daintily, without spattering or squooshing. (Noodles, hamburgers, and millefeuille/napoleons are disliked for these reason.) Oh, lord, another thing to consider. >_>

This is really interesting. Maybe I should make this the focus of my study.

[identity profile] narugami.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'd never thought about that before. Wow.

*thinks about one of her own characters who likes strawberries a lot and is also a girl*

You could make a website about it with things you've noticed? I don't think there's much in the way of feminist criticism in fandom (since a lot of the older fangirls ignore the female characters entirely to squee over the guys).

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Then I must forge a new path! ...

=________________=

Or I could play PSP...

[identity profile] narugami.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
PSP. Definitely play PSP.

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, huh? XD
