I know I know. Makes me giggle every time.

Usually when a female gets smacked in the face, they're depressed and/or suicidal (and in ABSOLUTELY NO POSITION to be the receiver of violence from friends LOL). I'm trying to think, it's different because she took a risk for the sake of moral goodness! Also, if she was a male it seems likely to me that she would just get punched instead.

Then again, I'm really tired of the proliferate use of tough love, especially as a way of making a story DRAMATIC and EPIC and EMOTIONAL. And I hate the way the receiver of the slap always falls to the ground and holds their face, while the focus zooms in on their misty, sparkling eyes looking up at the slapper, who is jumping up and down and shouting incoherently in a way that somehow teaches the victim a very important lesson.

Note: FMA was a pleasant departure from this trend, showing Ed punched in the face and hit over the head with a wrench and beaten soundly by his teacher, all by women. (Just last week me and my friend were laughing about how much we want to beat up Ed. It's not tough love. We love him, but we really want to punch him, too.)
