Okay, time for a mild and unimportant confession.

I'm playing Tales of Rebirth again. That's not the confession. The confession is that I have a crush on Tytree.

You know, the one I don't like. I still kinda wanna uppercut him. Seriously, if you like her bodacious body just the way it is, then you have to tell her that. Don't be all like, "aw, Hilda, you didn't try hard enough to find a place for yourself! You should really throw yourself at people who hate you more!" So now it's not so much that I wish Tytree would take off his shirt when he preaches, I just wish he would keep his big fat mouth shut in certain (many) situations. I think it's entirely possible that this game just botched up his character and only showed him saying things that I hate.

Tales of Rebirth is, on the whole, much more tolerable than I remember it being. Years later, it's actually extremely distracting. I guess I needed to play TOD2 to gain the proper appreciation.

EDIT: There may soon come Tales of Rebirth spoilers in the comments. Also, what was Tytree like when he was little? Was there anything to make Selena think he's adorable?

Why would you give a character that goal, make her so prominent and sympathetic, and then make her (pardon my French) EAT SHIT? I got so mad I thought she should just murder that guy AND his daughter and maim Shirley's face, while she's at it. What? I'm not evil.

Yeah, sure, and women have to adapt to prevent rape because the men can't control themselves? I think that these are experiments with giving the victim some of the blame in an attempt to escape cliche, but what it reveals is solid, undiluted ignorance. I've thought about it---would Refil and Genius really have been accepted if they just were kinder to their human neighbors? Refil teaching in school and Genius being best friends with Lloyd wasn't enough? Would a village of racists really open their hearts because of a show of kindness? Wouldn't Refil and Genius be at risk of hurting themselves emotionally or physically for people who don't deserve it? Do we really want to tell them they were isolated because they didn't try hard enough? Why are they doomed to this because they have pointy ears?

Hmm, I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with that chapter. I never finished the main plot because I got mad at Shirley for wanting to start a genocidal war because her crush, who has saved her life xxxx amount of times and is also someone she calls BROTHER, turned her down. (I'm sorry, I know you have issues, but that doesn't justify murdering millions of people ok thx) And to be honest, I didn't really want to play it in the first place so I got twitchy more quickly than I usually do.

That said, a lot of the philosophy in RPG/manga plots just gets me tetchy, because it's hopelessly removed from reality, cf. racism, pacifism, religion. Those would be interesting topics if they'd just think about them practically for five minutes!

You're right though, it's not fair.

Translation of a part of a review of Tales of Legendia on amazon.co.jp:

"...the heroine is awful. She fits all three prerequisites: she's mean and nasty, she's self-centered, and she's totally off her rocker." He means Shirley. I felt so vindicated when I read that...and I feel vindicated when other people say they don't like Shirley (≡ω≡) So fire away, my friend.

Shirley doesn't improve over the course of the game---she becomes more jealous, even petulant. IS IT CAN BE SPOILER TIEM? :D (highlight)



I don't really have a problem with lack of practicality. Tales can be idealistic it wants, as long as the answers show sensitivity, thought, wisdom, EARTH LOGIC etc. Srsly guys, stop marketing your Martian games to Terrans. We can't make head or tail of them.

I always try to give the female characters in games the benefit of the doubt. For example, it's not Tifa's fault that she's drawn to appeal to teenage boys, and I rather like Sakura in Naruto. That said, Shirley realllly annoyed me (though I did like Chloe and Stella).

Think of it this way: Chloe is the real heroine, and Shirley is the pretender. Then it all makes sense.

I, too, try to give heroines the benefit of the doubt. I like Tifa and Sakura. Some of them bore me because they don't really have much personality (Rena Lanford in Star Ocean 2 comes to mind), and some of them do annoy the hell out of me (Rena Lanford in Star Ocean EX comes to mind).
