The anime story did diverge from the manga in significant ways. I'm thinking most of all of Ed's National Alchemist exam. It came into the storyline at different times and different ways, and Ed's way of passing was markedly different in each version. They could cover that again, this time following the manga, and it would still be new material. Also, the unconfirmed title included the phrase 原作版, so I'm guessing hoping they would start over again completely.
Alternatively they could pick up the manga storyline later on, at a point the anime just couldn't get to, and then, still ignoring the old anime storyline, go on to make an animated version that was so faithful to the manga in that if you wanted to know about what went on before you'd have to read the manga, errr...
In the "getting EVEN FARTHER ahead of myself" department, perhaps the result will be a more traditional shounen anime like Naruto, where they don't eat up all the material the author wrote in 8 episodes and then move on to the determined incorporation of delusional bullshit mutter grumble. Maybe the manga will be able to keep up with the anime, and maybe it won't be so pseudo-intellectual that we can't have a real ending!!!! >:E
I did know about Tales of the Abyss! I was devoting my energy to sharing the news with unenlightened friends who have expressed some interest in the franchise. Certainly most of my flist is ready to join the dark side anyway, fufufu. I, well, when you put it like that, I can't help but see your point (’Д‘) Ed is my weakness!!!
Maybe Luke will be more "innocent" and "sheltered" than "idiot" and "rich kid", and his friends will see who is really responsible for CERTAIN EVENTS. Then after these events, Luke will cry and be really hard on himself, so everyone will tuck him into a nice fluffy bed, and Natalia will try to feed him the soup she made, and Tear will sing him a CERTAIN lullaby, and Jade will tell him it's better for them all for Luke to go to sleep and relax, and Anise will give him Tokunaga to hold (err, thanks Anise), and Ion will say something really nice, and Guy will WIPE AWAY HIS TEARS AHHH GAY SPARKLES.
