Aion beta is over, yanno. This is a big screencaps post! Note: I did a thing with the resizing in the first batch and then didn't bother with fixing it on the second batch. What you'll see is a bunch of pictures that are too small, then a bunch that are too large. I plan on updating all of them to "too large" later and posting a .zip of everything, EVERYTHING.
By the way, I highly recommend my current listening fare to all. It's a very sticky catchy fucking annoying song sung from the point of view of a girl who wants to get knocked up with the strongest guy in the world because her family martial arts discipline won't actually let HER be the strongest. WHO HASN'T FELT THAT, RIGHT?
Probably more appropriate listening fare would be Kajiura Yuki's Mai-Hime/Mai-Otome music.
I spent most of my time in this beta in Eltnen. Once I got there I did the quest that seemed the most painless: being a test subject for the loli teleporter-in-training.
She sent me to Asmodea.
DAWNING HORROR. (I'm not fond of PvP)
Checking on my map. This was a complete surprise for me, I hadn't been read a guide or been warned or anything.
Suddenly I realized that this was a rare opportunity to see my character EXPERIENCE SNOW. There's no snow in Elysea, is there? And I was in a safe, safe place, so I let my character idle for a moment and make squee motions at the snow.
I flew down and landed up under a shelf of rock/snow for several minutes unbothered, and that's grand considering there's a guy in the background who could have killed me. I didn't get killed until I wandered out from underneath to look around some more.
My friend actually fell off of Zumion Canyon and landed up under a waterfall (next to the bridge, around the words "Zumion Canyon" on the map) and stayed there for a bit until she could use Return again. After ascertaining that she wasn't in any danger I decided that my next course of action would be to go visit her because if there's anything I dream about, it's gliding off of the side of Zumion Canyon and seeing what's down there.
Looking up.
Us, in a hole. We constantly did falling motions. Yay.
Then I switched over to my Asmodean character for a bit. I'm not sure why---I think I did by accident while trying to get my affairs in order on other characters. I thought I'd play for a while.
I guess everyone is required to take a screenshot of themselves running around near the pretty tree and the lake when they start out in Asmodea.
Dude, what is this thing?! I dunno, but it's pretty and it has a lotus next to it! And more glowing flowers!
Even the pond weeds are a pretty color. I want to eat them or wear them or something. I WOULD BE THE PRETTIEST POND MONSTER EVER.
These FLOWERS. And what is this lake floor made out of? Fossils? Jellyfish? Jellyfish fossils? Maybe I don't wanna know---it just looks good.
If weird pretty purple and green flower petals aren't good enough for you, these ones also sparkle.
They call this an exile or punishment or something. Seriously?! Yeah, I know you can't grow crops in the other, much snowier places. Or you could basically live on Tatooine. >:|
PINK TREES.
Perhaps because I am partial to snowscapes and pink trees, this was about when I decided that Asmodea is 100% prettier than Elysea.
Dude, even this BUSH is pretty. It's just a dumb bush.
Asmodean girls do an arrestingly cute "blush" emote.
Returning to Elysea, there seemed to be an event in Eltnen, or a whole LOT of people complaining that there wasn't an event after all.
It was a freaking convention.
There was a duel of corn.
My friend from the waterfall agreed to go on a tour of Eltnen with me. Eltnen is disappointingly dry. You start out in a jungle and then discover---75% of that map is a parched fucking wasteland.
This was frankly the first interesting thing we saw.
Shortly after this, after running away from some trolls, we were ambushed by a party of 3 Asmodeans :/ Nice work, guys! You made a party just to jump into a portal only to get dumped in a place where you couldn't kill monsters and had to gank any low level morons like us for exploring!
Back at Eltnen, I noted that Chanters get to have rainbowy things over their heads.
At this point I had already made a decision: I saw Kyora Temple on a map on the internet and decided that it might be pretty. I did not teleport---I went, I walked, I got there alone. I met Asmodians and safely evaded them while thinking I was going to get killed again. It was thrilling and pretty exhausting.
Kyora Temple turned out to be ugly and sun-burnt too.
You'd think I'd get some bitchin' updrafts in the desert, but no.
"Oh, look, Rhubarb all the way out here! ♥"
"... (汗)"
Moving on, I went to the Goldenbough Citadel. I think this is the golden bough. Holy crap, guys.
Description? Barren, oppressive, lonely, a little frightening?
Moved on to Theobomos, or should I say another section of Mars? Dear developers: did you really think I'd wanna walk around on that?
Found a skeleton.
Found a harpy.
Found a fire Pokemon. P.S. That dead tree to my upper right is totally alive and a monster.
Oh for chrissake.
LOOK AT ALL THEM LEGS.
I thought this was an Elim being tortured at first. That would've been a bit much for me.
And here we have a dead end. This looks like a place they would use to add something on later.
After this I went to Heiron but I was getting tired and it was so deserted and scary that I thought I'd fly through hoping to hit on a nice-looking place.
Seriously? Abandoned, ruined villages sinking into the ground? Everything is dark grey?! I guess there's kind of the fact that I seemed to be visiting at night but WOW.
Oh, COME ON. HOW CAN THIS PLACE POSSIBLY BE SO UGLY? You want me to play here?
Eventually I came upon a town along a tidal river of pixels. "Ummm, guys, your river has some pixels in it."
Seriously.
Or my graphics engine gave out for something. And note: THE PIXELS ARE REALLY GREY.
Finally I got killed by a "Vapor." It could see me while I was hiding and it was invisible, and it was probably level 40+. OH WELL, I TRIED HARD.
This materialized outside Eltnen while I was gone. I guess there was an event!

After all my exploration, I am feeling honest trepidation. I have to play there if I want an Elysean character? I have to grind there? Somebody save me :( At least Glast Heim in RO was interestingly horrifying.

Well, that makes sense considering it sounds like one side gets the sun and the other side is like "NO SUN FOR YOU!"
I guess the Elyseans may not have gotten the better deal after all. Then again, do Asmodeans have to grind in a frigid wasteland comparable to your arid wasteland? It makes sense that since your flipping PLANET has been split in two there would be nice little havens of civilization surrounded by EXPANSES of unlivable terrain.
And... who knows? It does look very obvious they've set up room for expansions. Perhaps new areas will be even more pockets of lush life that survived the catastrophe!
