Reading Peacemaker Kurogane has led me to identify a certain genre of manga, a certain way of writing.

First, You make a whole series full of great people and pretty art.

Then, you kill them one by one.

Or you change their fates (e.g. make them poor, kill their families, paralyze them or make them sick, make them die for someone else, etc.) and fuck things up. The moral is that War is Bad: when big things happen, cute little people that the fans love have to snatch their happiness and peace whenever they can. THEN THEY DIE.

This rant began with PMK but started in earnest when I read this month's Hagaren, in which ANOTHER perfectly good male is thrown right out the window. So much for THAT.

Sad things in PMK:
Yamanami dies
Akesato disappears (without her man)
Okita has tuberculosis (or something)
Saya becomes a whore
Sakamoto Ryouma gets a fatal lobotomy
Ryouma's girlfriend dies (or something)

Sad things in Hagaren:
Ed and Al (enough said)
NINA (AAAAAAAAARGH)
Roy being separated from Hawkeye to become Sad Roy in Snow
Hughes being shot
Havoc being paralyzed from the waist down
LING BEING TURNED INTO GREED A;IOGHRO;IHG
Winry not being able take revenge for her parents because Ed is the worst boyfriend ever, at least to girls (yes I am still mad)

It's worth noting, however, that with Hagaren, it is suggested that the entire world is going to be rainbows and sunshine at the end, especially for the Elric kids. With PMK it looks like everyone except Tatsu and/or Tetsu is at risk of dying because samurai have that reputation for dying in a hurry.

More manga. The villain in Jinki Extend, as far as I can tell by looking over the first volume, is a crazy motherfucker rapist. I'm worried it's too romanticized but the art is JUST RIGHT. I'm just going to have to wait on that one. Sugar Sugar Rune is still wonderful and fun and full of classic shoujo manga nonsense.

I read something today about summoning classes in L2x's forums that says they've been more or less nerfed...as part of a general goal of making everything like the retail servers. See, now, I remember hearing that nonsense ages ago when we played L2x before, and I forgot it. It's just---how could you be so awesomely devoted to being shitty to people? It's unbelieveable. And I don't think I have to explain how the GMs deal with people who don't like it. Apparently they act the same way no matter what game you play.

Here's another winner. Some guy hit me with a Wind Blast on Dragon Pass. It did 1 damage but I was kind of wondering why he was, you know, hitting random people with spells. I showed him my wrath with a STUNNING, AWFUL ":/" face.

Him: It only did 1 damage.
Him: Don't get all assy on me.

CHARMED I'M SURE.

I don't know if it was just me, but I felt that the archers were nerfed too. I found it really annoying because I remember doing massive damage. :/

FEAR THE :/ FACE!

Silly boy.

FOOLS.

I remember getting +8 enchantments regularly and now THAT doesn't happen anymore, either. That's how I lost all my money. T_T

Also, I don't want to start having a fight about who's more upset, but the problem with the summoners is their servitors apparently can't stand up to S-grade equipment (and enhancements), or the kind of monsters you would meet at that level. Archers could conceivably help the problem of not making enough damage by buying a better weapon. Servitors can't equip anything, so they're stuck being just as strong (or as weak) as they were made. ...I'm actually not sure if I'll ever run into this problem myself, but it's annoying and disappointing.

You have a point. Kithal also pointed out to me that the massive damage I was doing in the past was probably with an S-grade bow, but shhhhh.

I think it's absolutely pointless to nerf in L2. It's hard enough as is to get levels. They're doing it just for PVP anyway, which is stupid. Most people don't even want to PVP a majority of the time anyway. And if they're really going to complain about the summons, then perhaps they should change their tactics, for example, targeting the summoner instead of the summons. What a genius idea! Doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure that out.

Heh, well, yeah, apparently that's what you're supposed to do, but summoners are SUPPOSED to die really easily. If the summkons are strong, then they can help a little bit, but if they die in three or four hits then what's the point? T_T

Sakamoto Ryouma gets a lobotomy
He does? I thought he died after that Suzu attack?

Ryouma's girlfriend dies (or something)
Nah, I don't think she died. If she really lived through that, she'll probably live on in agony and have a deep grudge to Suzu for killing off both her boyfriends. (Okaaay, so it's just one boyfriend and one crush but you get my point)

Somehow I'm slightly glad Chrono-sensei put the series on hiatus right before the showdown between Heisuke and Shinpachi. If it has to come to either of them dying, I don't think I can go through that... And despite him being the one who brought forward all this chaos in Kurogane, I still like Suzu... OTL

*tries to avoid FMA spoilers*

From: [identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com

Er. I mean. I heard something about a lobotomy being where you mess up the frontal lobe of the brain? And he got cut on the forehead, so um... >_> I guess lobotomy doesn't imply that he died. *changes it*

Suzu is um. I thought I would like him going into the series but now I don't know. On the one hand, he's an exmanwhore, but on the other hand, he's an exmanwhore. ...and I can't decide.

See, I think this is why I stopped reading PMK before it got into the really mind-bogglingly depressing bits. Poor Okita... T_T

I seem to be one of the very few persons who found the Ling=Greed thing ... well, kind of cool. ;_; ... +TWISTED, NO D:+

From: [identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com

Well, it can mean non-con Ling x Ed porntastic... :DDD

From: [identity profile] boogietiere.livejournal.com

D:!! I had to read through your lump of spoilers just to reassure myself that it wasn't Envy who got finished off. Okay maybe i should have just asked you directly whether he died but i guess i was so anxious about it that i wanted to shed my manly tears immediately had it been the case.

Not that i read the manga or anything =D would you say it is any funner than episode 26+? And now that i'm on the topic is envy still larking about with his scaaary tentacles?

From: [identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com

>< Ack, I'm sorry! (If you do need to ask directly about somefing else, inquire at AIM SN Kamiya Komaki. I changed it recently. :D)

The manga is funner and more SENSIBLE, though I have to admit I sort of miss the anime version's moaning, gasping, vulnerable Ed. Just seeing the little turd move, you know? *is punched for saying "little"* And episode 13, and Roy's voice haha (but that's pre-episode 26...). I'd say they're equal.
