I watched the Vesperia trailer and put all my thoughts and reactions into my journal. That's what it's for, right? And yet I have the feeling I'm going to be ashamed for going ape on this trailer in a week or so. Heck, I'm ashamed right now. How could I blather this much about 2 minutes of video? I might post screenshots. Later.
First we have the Bandai Namco Games logo. Yes, hi.
"Project Vesperia" Presents
The first thing we see is a beautiful starry sky. There are blue, purple, even a little red or pale green groups and nebulas, and a couple shooting stars. There's also some appropriately sparkly starry music. It is superior, the standard by which all starry skies in video games must be judged from this point onward.
Estelle: Telkareumilis
Estelle: In this world
Estelle: Nobody knows how far the sea and the land go.
The starry sky fades to slightly mediocre shots flying over land and sea.
Estelle: A barrier surrounds the city of our residence.
Designed and created by Namco-Bandai Games
Then the view fades to what looks like a city that's on a hill, or tiered like a bithday cake. The camera is looking up from below. At the top, a giant spear-shaped point reaches into the sky. It's surrounded by a grey stone castle, then large houses surrounded by trees and foliage, then slightly smaller houses and no foliage, and then at the bottom of the city, less imposing buildings that look comfortably worn. In the middle is a path leading upwards. You can hear people talking and laughing in the background. The city is populated, and its residents are content.
Estelle: We live on inside that barrier, to protect ourselves.
We see the city from outside, and very high above. It is indeed surrounded by what appears to be a barrier. There's also a bunch of spokes at the bottom level that look like docks.
Character Design
Fujishima Kousuke
The music gets all epic and wonderful, and there are two character designs shown. One is Yuuri, and the second is Estelle.
Chief Director/Producer
Higushi Yoshito
We are shown a picture that looks like it was cut into a flat stone. From left to right, I'm seeing an erupting volcano and/or lightning over spiky, unfertile land, and some kind of writing at the bottom. Then either animals or aircraft with two wings and a long tail, marked by a crescent and a star. There's more writing here that may give a name for these. Some humans armed with spears are fighting them. And then on the right, we have what looks like a bomb or the sun, sending tendrils in every direction, destroying buildings, tossing people around, and killin' stuff. Oh, there's also some writing in the middle that may label this catastrophe. It seems to me that this image indicates that Vesperia takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity was forced to live in a city with a barrier to protect them from the elements. Or I'm just obsessed with post-apocalyptic stories. Whatever.
Yuuri: I thought you were going to the top in the chivalry to make things right in the government!
Yuuri shouts while blocking a shield with his sword. He pushes it off, and while he does so he gives a wink of...effort, I guess. Yuuri appears to be the cool, sexy "bad boy" type. His hair is long, straight, and black, and his outfit is black too. Hero wearing black A+
Flynn: Yuuri, your way is wrong.
We see Yuuri's opponent, Flynn, a dreamy but serious guy with blonde hair, blue eyes and sturdy armor. He continues the conversation back-to-back with Yuuri. This implies not only that there are fights with cool choreographing, but also that there are characters capable of having them, and the characters are guys. With black and blonde hair, respectively. Just in case you were wondering if we would get any subtext in this game. Umm. Looks like Flynn took the high road and Yuuri took the low road. Even though they used to be friends, they parted ways to change the world and planned to meet up at the end? But it's not working out that way? I'm also thinking there will be at least one fight against Flynn, possibly with tragic results. Hero's rival wearing white and looking like the stereotypical oujisama, A++ would buy again
Girl: If I can just fix the Aero levels, it'll calm right down!
A girl with brown hair and a dull red outfit taps frantically at a console with a display projected in midair. Meanwhile, a big flying monster with dark grey skin, two wings, and a long tail...hey, is this one of the ones in the picture at the beginning?, carrying an armored man with a spear, busts through a large window behind the girl and breathes fire, apparently down at her. In return, she whips around and shoots off three fireballs. I guess this fills in the slot for the wizard RPG archetype.
Boy: I'm a member of the Blade of Hell guild!
Here we have little boy with poky brown hair. I think if Lloyd were 9, this is what he would look like. He's wearing poofy mustard yellow pants with a green and white shirt. Oh dear. He also has a very large bag with a sword poking out of it. He's talking about guilds---apparently there's going to be a guild system. I heard some people that was in TOI and it wasn't any fun.
Next we see a flash of some people who are wearing mostly black in a dark churchy place. They're frowning, too. Hm, maybe they're bad guys. :P There's a big muscled, scarred guy with a massive sword on the left, then a thinner looking guy who must be flexible or ninja-like in the middle, and a girl with a giant crescent blade on the right. These last two look like Soul Calibur characters. :P The screen switches to a shot of a big blue rock monster or something roaring at Yuuri. Up above, the maybe villains are watching. Looks like they sicced it on Yuuri.
Estelle: I want to help this person share their feelings! Someone is waiting...!
Estelle, a fetching pink-haired girl, appears to be looking at something that frightens or surprises her, as she covers her mouth with her hands. She has a bracelet on her left wrist---is this important? She's standing in front of old/boring people that look like NPCs and guards. We see a heavy wooden gate closing, people running, and a little girl huddling on the ground with nobody to help her. Estelle starts to run to save her, but Yuuri grabs her arm to stop her. Then we see Yuuri running back through the gate with a giant grey-haired boar chasing him. He slides under the gate in between the spikes at the bottom with maybe an inch or two of leeway. Thrills, chills and spills!
Yuuri: Then this is nothing but the Empire we all hate so much!
We see two ninjaish guys in black and masks that give them glowing eyes jumping down from above. Yuuri stops an attack from one of them---it looks like they have wavy blades instead of hands. Whew. Then Yuuri and Flynn dispatch the two ninjas in unison, with the same sword move. *snickers* It looks like it's raining. Those wacky assassins, always coming after people in the rain.
Flynn: Will you choose to go the way of sullying your hands?
It's night in the city. Yuuri walks right by Flynn without saying a word, and Flynn only watches him go. A disagreement is in evidence. (Flynn's voice is kinda hot. I'd like to have him whisper sweet nothings into my ear. I do not blush when I think about this. Never.)
Now we have a montage of fighting scenes. In this first one, the blue rock monster from before seems to be attacking, surprising a black panther thing into going WHOA and flipping backwards! Yuuri lightly jumps backward, and the boy with yellow pants from before is also avoiding the attack. Estelle is in the back, tending to the girl in the dull red outfit, who is sitting on the floor. By the way, Yuuri wields a sword but no shield, and the boy has a very big hammer.
Yuuri: Souryuurengazan!
Yuuri flips his sword in midair while performing this attack. Have any other Tales characters done this? It looks cool. Estelle is fighting here, too. She has a rapier, or some kind of sword meant for poking, and a cute little round shield. The monster's skin is dark red now, and the setting is the same place as the dark churchy place the possible villains were in.
The girl in red casts a spell that looks like Tidal Wave or Maelstrom, but sounds like Ice Tornado...in the next scene, if you stop the video for a second, you see her hitting things with a BOOK strapped to her back. Oh, man. You know, one of the reasons I loved Tales of Phantasia was that you could kill things with books. Now they've brought that to 3D? Come to think of it, the upper layers of this girl's outfit and the sash remind me of Klarth. Oh man. Also, in this scene, everyone is outdoors fighting funny little snail monsters that make beeping noises. The background is gorgeous.
Estelle: Nurse!
Pretty nurses in blue swallowtail outfits run around sparkling and curing characters! The girl in red flips out of the way as the red-skinned rock monster shoots a beam of light. □+← BACKSTEP
Estelle: Pikohan!
Back to the snail monsters. Estelle is using Pikohan, the girl in red is chanting for a spell, and the boy with the hammer is...guarding or something. Jeez, give him something to do. Yuuri also takes a swing at a snail. Look, a combo!
Yuuri: (growling something that sounds like) Come on!
This looks like Rock Break, only with the effect of light shining up from under the ground like in Ground Dasher. Yuuri is somehow participating in this, possibly as the caster of this spell or as a part of a unison attack or combo.
Yuuri: (maybe?) Kogahazan!
The girl in red appears to be casting Tractor Beam on a blue rock monster here, but it also looks like the AI still can't tell the difference between a monster that can be lifted with telekinetic force and A GIANT HEAVY THING that can't. The monster isn't lifting into the air! Therefore Yuuri is probably finishing it, with more flipping his sword in the air. The monster's death effect reminds me of the ones in Symphonia. Hammer boy is still doing nothing.
The party of four, apparently at the battle victory screen. They all strike a pose, except for hammer boy, who apparently doesn't get jack shit in this trailer. Yuuri's pose is flashy, and again involves throwing his sword into the air and catching it when he poses. ...it really reminds me of Cloud.
Estelle: If I keep traveling...I can know more things.
Estelle is standing on a peak overlooking the sparkling ocean, beautifully detailed and deep sky above. The stars at the very beginning were also very detailed, too---are they putting extra effort into the sky? Anyway, Estelle is enjoying the view, her hands clasped to her heart, and the breeze stirring her hair. Unfortunately this line does not make her seem very bright. I guess Fujishima is trying to fix his problem of pairing amazing beautiful heroines with crummy bitchy guys by pairing a helpless airheaded heroine with an awesome sexy guy. :/ Is he ever going to make a heroine that pleases me? Behind Estelle, we see the rest of the party. The black panther thing from before is present. It looks more like a giant grey-blue fox. It has a scar over one eye, a huge chain around its neck, and...a pipe in its mouth. There are pretty flowers swaying in the wind, too.

Here we have a shot of the city, looking up at a piece of the barrier. There's all kind of rotating, spinning circles in it, and runes or writing that's the same alphabet as in the picture from the beginning. The sky is, again, gorgeous.

The city at dusk? Lots of old-fashioned houses lit up with warm yellow light, and another breathtaking sky shading from black at the top, to purple, to pink, orange, and yellow, right down to the surprisingly reflective sea. The city barrier cuts across the sky.
Estelle: Flynn, you trust Yuuri, don't you?
No characters visible here, but we see first and foremost a massive tree with orange leaves. Little white bits of fluff or leaves are floating by on the air. It looks like there's a funny little village at the foot of this tree. One of the houses has a propeller decorated with curlicues.
Flynn: Yes.
*snicker*
Yuuri is shown standing on a hill overlooking the city. We have a view of the shape of it's barrier and the stars in the sky. His blue fox is sitting next to him, and his sword is leaning against the tree. I see little blue flowers with five petals---are these supposed to remind us of Yuuri? :P Then we see the title. It's a very pretty star. I am satisfied.
Subtitle: An RPG that follows justice to the very end
Yuuri: That's the path I've chosen.
Let me rephrase this: Another RPG where the main character dies for a good cause. "I've chosen the path of emo."

I AM FUJOSHI HEAR ME ROAR
etc.
Thank you for your kind comment T^T I gave a lot of detail because when I started writing this, I just wanted to make some notes about the engraved stone picture. I started to feel I needed to offset my obsession with post-apocalypse settings with attention to other parts of the PV, and I was noticing lots of other things. I needed a chance to comment that Estelle is pretty, whatserface hits things with a book, and Yuuri and Flynn are inspiringly subtexty.
I'm thinking they're going to introduce at least one more male party member, who will also have subtext with someone? Obviously if this is Fujishima Tales the girls will have lesb0r context, too. =_= Hurrr. No, but I am most looking forward to a straight pairing with good chemistry and banter. (I'm thinking of Shiina and Zelos, or Anise and Jade.)
