Well, I thought it was hysterical. First and foremost because it's a little like reading somebody's fanfic, but instead, it's OFFICIAL. Jesus Christ. This is what I DREAM about.
The train they boarded was unusually crowded for one that traveled an outlying region.
"This train hasn't come through any big cities, doesn't? And it's going to keep going through rural areas..." They couldn't see any empty seats to sit in. Edward and Alphonse were forced to stand next to the entryway.
"I was planning to sleep until our next destination..."
"Want me to go look for a seat?"
"Nah, that's okay. If it's like this here then all the other cars must be packed, too."
Every seat in the car was filled, and the people who couldn't find a place in the rows of seats stood, joking with their friends and playing cards. Edward casually watched the people in the train car. "I've never seen this many people on a train that goes through the country."
Watching a group of a few people chatting over their seats, he noticed they were wearing clothes that didn't seem quite right for people going from on rural place to another, ones that reminded him of a big city.
"They sure are wearing nice clothes for people going out to the country."
"Yeah. Maybe there was a festival somewhere?"
"Maybe. We've been camping for two weeks, so we don't have any idea what's going on in the real world. We'll have to listen to the radio somewhere, or buy a newspaper..." Then Edward abruptly closed his mouth.
"...what's the matter?" Alphonse looked down at his big brother. Edward had his head just slightly tilted to the side.
"I just thought I heard a voice I've heard somewhere before..." Holding still and listening carefully, Edward was able to hear the voice clearly this time. He hadn't heard it for a while, but it was definitely the voice of someone he knew.
"Whose voice is it?"
"Who...well, I think it's that guy who helps us out even though we don't want him to...where is he?" Edward looked around the car filled with people obstructing his view, craning his neck and standing on his tiptoes.
But there was a little wrinkle between his eyebrows. The person he was looking for wasn't one he liked...or was, in fact, someone he hated.
"...there." Edward's gaze finally settled. "Over there." In the place Edward pointed at, Roy Mustang, who they both knew, was sitting and talking happily with some women.
Just like Edward, Roy worked for the army, and was a man who had the qualifications to be a licensed Alchemist. He was a colonel, and the commander of the eastern military headquarters. He had climbed to that position at a very young age, and whenever there was trouble the jet black eyes under his dark hair glittered sharply. But right now the look in Roy's eyes that Edward saw was not the one that flashed confidently, but one that had a certain shade of enjoyment.
Also in that direction, the blonde hair of Jean Havok, a little taller than Roy, was waving around. Havok worked at the eastern military headquarters, like Roy. Havok didn't seem to be leading the conversation in the train, nor did he seem to be ignoring it---just giving one-word-answers when he had to, standing there surrounded with the same aura of absent-mindedness as always.
Alphonse joined his brother in watching Roy, who was standing in front of a couple of women in their seats and talking.
"He looks like he's having fun talking to those women. ...but what is he doing on this rural train? Is it for work?"
"Dunno..."
Roy continued to laugh with the women, smiling the whole time, with no idea that he was being watched by Edward and Alphonse. Roy, who took on a great deal of pressure as the commander of the eastern military headquarters, didn't have the kind of job that would make him get on a train going through an outlying region very often. And both Roy and Havoc were wearing civilian clothes, rather than their army uniforms.
When Edward and Alphonse listened carefully, they could hear the conversation.
"I imagine going anywhere when the train schedules are so off-track is rather inconvenient."
Edward and Alphonse looked at each other for a moment, surprised to hear Roy's normally harsh and scolding voice sound so nice.
"Yes, it is. But we're not very worried about how fast we get where we're going."
"We just went out do a little shopping in a bigger city. Are you here for your job?"
The women appeared to be a group with a lot of money. Edward and Alphonse could see their expensive-looking clothing from where they stood a little ways away. Apparently the women had started talking to Roy, and now he was entertaining himself chatting with them.
"I just came out to deal with a few things."
"I see. Then I hope we're not troubling you by stopping to talk?"
"Not at all. I was just going to do some minor business and go home, so I'm very happy to spend some time talking with you."
Roy was looking like a very nice guy. He gave the women a fresh smile, and they blushed in unison.
"...from the looks of it, I don't think he's on the job." Deciding that, Edward picked up the trunk he had left sitting on the floor.
"Are you going to go talk to him?"
"Might as well. I thought maybe we could get him to give us some news, too." If Roy was working, then Edward didn't plan to bother him. But if he's not, then I can go talk to him, Edward thought, taking a step down the aisle towards the seats.
At that moment, Roy looked up for the first time.
His eyes clearly met with Edward's, and for a moment, his face changed from a smile to one of surprise.
"Hey, how's it been?" Edward knew Roy couldn't hear him, but he said something anyway as a show of friendship, and waved at him. Edward imagined that Roy, having not seen him for a while, would raise a hand, say "Hey," and begin to make his way over to Edward.
But.
"......"
Even though he should have seen Edward, Roy slowly looked back to the women, and began chatting with them again. The look of surprise that was on his face when he noticed Edward went back to a more pleasant one, and was aimed back at the women.
"Huh?" Maybe he didn't know it was me, Edward thought, and again he began walking towards Roy.
Roy continued talking. Edward could begin to hear bits of conversation about the clocktower in some town that had a beautiful sound when it rang, or a station with amazing scenery off to the east. Just then, Roy put his hand out to the back of the seat in front of him, as if to support himself in the moving train. Edward could see Roy's hand on the back of the seat, facing in Edward's direction. Then.
Casually, but very obviously, Roy pointed at Edward. He continued to smile and talk with the women, not even glacing in Edward's direction. But his finger was very clearly pointing towards Edward.
"...?"
What? Edward thought, pausing, and then the finger moved up and down. Edward finally figured it out. The finger was telling him, "Don't bother me. Go away."
"......!"
"Haha...ahahaha..." Seeing that, Alphonse laughed a little uncomfortably, but Edward, standing next to him, was not smiling---he had a look of outrage on his face.
They had spent two weeks crawling around in the dirt looking for some "stone" they'd heard about in a rumor from a faraway region, and, still discouraged from not being able to find anything, had had to wait for the train to their next destination for three hours. When they finally got on the train, it was, for some reason, so full that Edward couldn't take a nap. And now, the friend they ran into was telling them to go away in just one of the most amazing ways they had ever seen. It was only natural when a little muscle in Edward's forehead began to twitch.
"He's just completely ignoring us...!"
"They do say that the colonel likes girls. I'm guess he doesn't want anybody to bother him right now. He does seem to be a big favorite..." Alphonse, who was always much calmer, said admiringly, looking at Roy, who was still at the center of the conversation and had the attention of both women.
"So, are you alone?"
"Yes, I am."
"Oh, I'm surprised you don't have someone. I wouldn't ever leave you alone."
"Then shall we stay together and talk until the terminal station? I'd much rather do something fun on this trip." Roy, who worked for the military, where the vast majority of people were men, probably just wanted to enjoy some pleasant conversation.
Edward had a pretty good idea of how it felt for Roy, but he was not amused. "Trying to send us away with his FINGER!"
"He just doesn't want us to bother him while he's having fun. We can talk to him later."
"That goddamn colonel..." Clicking his tongue, Edward began to move back near the doorway, but apparently he just couldn't let it go. He stopped, and turned back in Roy's direction.
He and Alphonse had just decided again to try as hard as they could to get along with the colonel, but Edward was frustated that it just wasn't going right in the first place. It didn't suit him to just retreat after being so bluntly ignored. He was going to have to say something to the colonel, maybe just to cheer himself up. "Al."
"Hm?"
"Hold this for me." Edward pushed the trunk he was carrying into Alphonse's arms.
"Well, okay...what are you doing?"
"I'm going to go talk to him. I'm not going to have any fun otherwise."
"Oh, but, wouldn't it be bad if we bothered him right now? Oh, wait, Ed...!"
Turning his back on Alphonse's attempts to stop him, Edward grinned, and took a deep breath. Then, just as it looked as if he was smirking, he instead changed, obviously on purpose, to a smile, and stepped forward.
"DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!" Yelling at the top of his lungs, and even waving his arm, Edward ran cheerfully over to Roy.
I translated 大佐の野郎 as "that goddamn colonel." I let my personal opinion interfere with the translation. Oh, I'm not worthy.
By the way, I'm not making any money off of this and I'm not going to translate any more, so please don't sue my ass. I need my money for expensive therapy. vvv
