(no subject)

Made and ate: mackerel shio-yaki (salted and grilled), stir-fried cabbage with curry powder, hiyayakko (little blocks of tofu with stuff on them), and miso soup with potatoes and onions. OH NO, I DIDN'T FOLLOW THE MENU SHOWN IN A FRIGHTENING SCHIZOPHRENIC 80S JAPANESE COOKING BOOK FOR INEXPERIENCED YOUNG WIVES TO THE LETTER! WHY, I NEVER! Took a picture---and probably closed my phone too soon, so NO PICTURE! Haha! Also NO E-MAIL from Snotty's, but I will have to settle for sort of simmering instead of being outright annoyed because the food was splendid and I ate so much. And a couple of those doujinshi are in their e-bay store anyway. Will make sure to fuss about wanting to buy them and not being able to until something happens.

waah, miso soup with potatoes.. why did that thought never occur to me?!

*wants fried tofu*

The one I made had julienned potatoes and only needed to cook for a few minutes, but I've had one with chunks of potatoes that was arguably hearty...

FRIED TOFU. ♥

I used to be able to buy it at the Asian hypermarket predone (fried tofu), but I've never actually made it.. I figure a medium to soft tofu and canola oil, but I've never proven it..

Wait, deep-fried or fried, like, normal? I have a recipe that calls for normal fried tofu and uh, it would be handy to be able to just buy it.

fried so that it's sort of.. crunchy/puffy.. like at veggieplanet..

The smell of miso soup makes me nauseous for some reason ._.

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...does it have a smell? ...and, wow, what a shame. I was thinking most of the Westerners I know think miso soup is this gift from god.

[identity profile] moumusu.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not a shame. Wah. ;_; But interesting all the same.

I remember my first taste of miso soup. It was on a field trip in elementary school in Alabama to this Japanese department thing at the U of A. I remember thinking it was kind of really weird and musty at first b/c of the fermented taste. And then after a few more gulps, it got kind of addictive.

Japanese department?

Oh, heh heh, sorry. =_= Does it taste musty? ...I will have to eat more to make sure.
