My first note of Ruby's personality will describe how she acts when she's tired. She's a baby. She doesn't know to go to bed when she's exhausted and needy. When she gets tired or hungry, she turns into a mouthing biting jumping whirlwind that can only be temporarily distracted by throwing around her favorite toys. She likes biting them maybe as much as she likes to fling herself at my legs while I'm walking around minding my own business and try to hang on by biting my pants and initiating a tug of war vs. my leg.

On her first day, she spent 8 hours in a truck with a bunch of other barking noisy dogs being transported from the south. She didn't fall asleep in the 2 hour car ride on the way home, and she didn't fall asleep for several hours at home, where there were a lot of new things to explore and none of the living things she had been living with. THEN WE FOUND OUT puppies her age can sleep 16-20 hours a day :| The first day was REALLY SCARY. My parents and I thought we had a difficult animal on our hands. We were ready to deal with it but it would have been harder than dealing with the mellow dog we have now.

When she gets up from a nap she is the most lovely dog in the world and will let me give her the head scratching she so richly deserves.

She loves to crawl under the couch. If you throw a toy anywhere in the main room, she will retrieve it and take it to her lair under the couch.

She occasionally chases her tail, both standing up and sitting down. This mostly happens when she is tired and wants to bite everything ever. Mosey, my last dog, did not chase her tail and I had given up on ever seeing a dog do it in person. It is the grandest privilege on earth to own a dog who has chased her tail even once in my presence.

She will allow people to pick her up and carry her. I wish we could use this forever but likely we can't.

During the day, she also likes to sleep in a makeshift bed that's a plastic storage container she can climb in and out of herself, with a soft blanket and a toy she likes. She must have these within reach to munch on, because she just wants to bite everything when she goes to sleep. She must have someone sitting near her when she does this---they don't have to be paying attention to her, and they can even be talking softly to one another, reading, telling her a long story about her birth and existence and proud future, etc. THIS IS ONE OF MY IMPORTANT JOBS.

I think it's very cute that no matter how nuts she gets, if you've met all the requirements you can just put her in a nice soft den place and she'll go down without a peep. She's been a very very good dog at night so far.

Freckles on her face and tummy, light colored eyes, a light colored nose, and her general tan and white coloring suggest that she has some kind of pointer in her. When we first talked about adopting her, I thought, I hope she doesn't grow up to be funny-looking like pointers do! Ha, ha. Hey, when I got Mosey I didn't care that much about beagles, either! Ha ha ha. I hope everybody understands that I have no choice but to love pointers now: Ruby will convert me.

Yang suggests that we somehow draw a devil's trap onto a round bed for Ruby.

I DEMAND PICTURES.

From what I've seen, I'd say it's very likely she's got pointer in her. If she does, be prepared for an INSANELY active dog. Every pointer I've met has been a hyperactive nutcase, heh. They're very affectionate, though.

When the transport guy handed Tika to me, she licked my face...gawd, I almost started bawling. Then she jumped in the car like she owned it, made a little nest out of the blanket we'd brought for her, and fell asleep. Ack, look at me, I'm waxing nostalgic--stopping now.

Oho, really? She's mellowed considerably now---she's only 1/4 pointer and the rest is all beagle so maybe, maybe she'll just be trouble when she's tired. She spent a lot of today with dad and I am told she was a good girl: exploring plants on a leash and sleeping while he read a magazine on the porch.

DOGS ARE CUTE and they should be talked about. My parents say that when they picked up Ruby there were a lot of other people who liked dogs and they were all excited 8D It's a happy occasion!

I'll see what I can do about pictures. She seems bigger even than when she got here and all I have is a video of her sleeping on the first day >3> I MUST MAKE HASTE.

Pointer/beagle is gonna make for one heck of a scenthound, heh. Although if she was coonhound/beagle...oh dear lord, the BAYING. There was a beautiful blue tick coonhound in camp once, but her constant baying drove me nuts. We were lucky with Ginger--she was a coonhound/retriever mix, but she inherited the lab bark.

There were lots of people when I went to pick up Tika, too. We all ooohed and aaahed and aaawwwed over the dogs as they came out of the van. Although there was one incident with a basset mix that decided to take off across the field towards the road. >_> Fortunately he was caught just before he reached it.

Also, yes, tail chasing is funny. One of the golden retrievers did it in camp the other day.
